Google Superbowl Ad (via @davedelaney #brandbowl)

I agree with Dave Delaney that the Twitter back channel discussions was far more interesting to watch but I did enjoy the second half of the game. Thanks for posting this ad, Dave. I may have missed it or most likely not shown here in Canada during our televised Superbowl. ;(

P.S. I did find out about this website from one of our commercials: http://ontario.ca/businessprograms

Teens In Tech Conference 2010 [Video]

They haven’t learned that the sky is not, in fact, the limit - and for god’s sake, don’t tell them. And, like we likely felt at their age, they feel the adults are the slowest, dumbest, IE-using, fax-sending nerds imaginable.

Teens In Tech Conference 2010 from ReadWriteWeb on Vimeo.

We would read books like Growing Up Digital and often talk about how adults and children are very different with the way both consume technology. That’s great and all but it’s an adult writing and explaining to other adults. Watch the video from a group of teens on how they view the digital world. “Straight from the horse’s mouth”, as they say!

Entrepreneurs don't noodle, they do.

Says Suster, ” The best entrepreneurs have a bias for making quick decisions and accept that at best 70% of them will be right.  They acknowledge that some decisions will be bad and they’ll have to recover from them.  Building a startup might be a game of inches but you don’t get timeouts to pause and analyze all of your decisions.”

While it’s important to lay out a product plan, create a good business strategy and study your competition, don’t expect to be perfect. Leave room for a margin of error and don’t be afraid to pivot quickly if your company needs it. You can’t be a startup founder without taking any risks - if you were really that safe you’d be working for someone else.

Sometimes, a timely, relevant post can really put things into perspective for you. Let decision-makers influence the pace and growth of your business. When you’re called upon for your opinion/suggestion, be ready with your ideas. Knowing where you stand amongst the pieces on the board makes the decision process run smoothly.

School board cutting back student fees for 2010-11

The Halton District School Board (HDSB) approved a new student fee policy Wednesday night that eliminates charges for registration, textbooks and course-related materials at both the elementary and high school levels.

While fees will still be charged for what the board calls ‘supplementary items and activities’ such as yearbooks, field trips and athletics, board staff expects the new policy to ease the financial burden on Halton families.

Did I mention my kid’s school fundraiser? ;) Please donate via Paypal. It’s for a good cause. Funds raised will help support cultural performances, classroom library books and the Kindergarten Revitalization project. Your generous pledges will be posted on this blog for disclosure. Many thanks!

A book on growing up: Ladies, lower your expectations

The author is Lori Gottlieb, who famously, yes, famously, penned Marry Him! for the Atlantic magazine in March 2008. The key insight: Hunting for a mate customized to a long list of expectations (cut abs, dark hair, smart, funny, millionaire, nice dog, sports only in moderation, no smelly feet) will doom young women to a forever state of disappointment until such time as she is too old and saggy to be deemed marriage material.

“My advice is this: Settle!” cried the exclamatory Ms. Gottlieb in the Atlantic. “That’s right. Don’t worry about passion or intense connection. Don’t nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling `Bravo!’ in movie theatres.”

The author calls it re-educating women in their 20s to seek substance over superficiality. I know there are plenty of comments running around that brain of yours: both men and women, married or single. Insert comment below.

Helping others helps John Travolta (via @TheSpec)

I think help is probably the biggest button on the planet. People need to help each other. They want to feel like they can help, and when you have the opportunity I think most people do help. And I had this rare, rare privilege to have this big, empty plane in my back yard and I filled it with supplies and doctors and it was an awesome opportunity.

What a classy guy! Great humanitarian work, Mr. Travolta!

(One of) The History of the Reuben Sandwich

I’ll tell you about how I got the sandwich idea. I owned a delicatessen on Broadway and one day a dame walks in, one of the theatrical dames, and she’s down and out I suppose, and she asks me for something to eat. Her name was Anna Selos. Well, I’m feeling sort of good, so I figure I’ll clown around for the dame. That’s how it all came about. I’m clowning for the dame. Well, what do I do? I take a holy bread that I used to keep and grab up the knife and, you know, clowning like, I cut it right through on the bias. Then I take some roast beef, I don’t remember exactly what. But, anyway, I figure I’ll put anything on. So I take some meat and cheese and I slap it on, and I put on some spice and stuff and I make her up a sandwich; it was a foot high. Well the dame just eats it, that’s all. She must have been plenty hungry. And when she gets through she says, “Mr. Reuben, that’s the best sandwich I ever tasted in my life.” Well, the idea comes to me in a flash. I’ll call it the Anna Selos sandwich, after the dame. Then, one night, she brings some friends up, you know, stage people and a newspaper man, and this guy he goes right behind the counter and makes himself up a sandwich, and then he tells me why I don’t call the sandwich after celebrities? Like what happened with Anna Selos. Why don’t I call it the Anna Selos sandwich? Well, boys, in a flash, I get the idea. Anna Selos! I’ll call it a Reuben Special.

Hmmmm. A side of fresh dill pickles and Kalamata olives. Top it all off with a steaming bowl of onion soup. That’s my kind of a perfect Sunday lunch! Thanks for the inspiration, Shelby.
